Uptime monitoring costs most small teams between $0 and about $35 a month, and most growing SaaS teams between roughly $30 and $200 a month. The sticker price matters less than the billing model: per-monitor tools charge for endpoints, per-seat tools charge for teammates, and usage-based tools charge per check run, so three vendors with similar headline prices can differ by 10x once you add people, endpoints or a faster check interval. Free tiers exist at almost every vendor and are genuinely fine for personal sites, but they cap you at five minute intervals and thin alerting.
How much does uptime monitoring cost?

Two things stand out. First, the entry price is not the interesting number: StatusCake's €16.66 buys 100 monitors while UptimeRobot's €9 buys 10 to 50, so the price per monitored endpoint differs by roughly 5x at the bottom of the market. Second, Better Stack is the only one in that table priced per person, which is the single decision that changes your bill the most over time.
What are the pricing models, and how does each one scale?

The usage-based row deserves a flag, because it interacts badly with the thing you most want. A check that runs every minute from six regions is 259,200 executions a month per endpoint. Under per-run billing, the correct engineering choice (check often, check from everywhere) is also the expensive one, so teams quietly stretch their intervals to save money and lose exactly the detection speed they were paying for.
Why do two teams pay such different amounts for the same thing?
Take a concrete case: an agency watching 40 client sites, with 6 people internally and 40 client contacts who want read access to a status page.
- Per monitor: you pay for 40 endpoints. The 46 humans cost nothing.
- Per seat: at roughly $29 a month per responder, the 6 internal people alone are about $174 a month before you count a single monitor, and inviting clients is either impossible or another line item.
- Tiered: 40 monitors sits inside a mid tier, so you likely pay a flat $15 to $60 and stop thinking about it, until monitor 101.
- Usage based: 40 endpoints at one minute from six regions is over 10 million check runs a month, which is not a plan you want at per-run rates.
Same job, four very different invoices. This is why the useful question when comparing tools is not "what does it cost" but "what does it charge me for, and is that thing about to grow?" What hidden costs should I watch for?
The headline plan price is rarely the whole bill. Five things reliably show up later:
- The status page as an add-on. Several monitoring tools bundle only a basic status page and sell the branded, custom-domain version separately. A standalone status page product can cost more than the monitoring feeding it, which is why we include a branded status page in every plan rather than as an upsell.
- SMS credits. Email and Slack alerts are almost always free. Text messages and phone calls are metered nearly everywhere, and a noisy month can cost more than the plan.
- Regions behind a paywall. Multi-region checking with cross-region retry is often reserved for higher tiers, so the plan that fits your monitor count may not include the thing that stops false alarms.
- Data retention. If you owe a customer an availability figure, you need history. Short retention on cheap tiers quietly makes SLA reporting impossible.
- Seats for people who never log in. Under per-seat pricing, the finance lead who wants one dashboard link costs the same as an on-call engineer.
Monitoring is a small line item, but small line items are exactly the ones that sprawl. It is worth having somewhere that categorizes recurring software spend so that a $9 tool does not quietly become four $9 tools bought by three different teams.
Is free uptime monitoring good enough?
For a personal site, a portfolio or a staging environment, yes. Free tiers are real products, not crippled demos: UptimeRobot's covers 50 monitors and StatusCake's covers 10. The limits that matter are the check interval and the alerting. Nearly every free tier caps you at five minute checks from a single location, with email-only notifications.
Those two limits are fine right up until downtime costs you money. A five minute interval means an outage can run for almost five minutes before anything notices, and a short outage between checks may never be recorded at all. Single-location checking produces false alerts when the network path to that one probe hiccups, and teams learn to ignore alerts that cry wolf. If you are trying to hold a 99.99 percent availability target, the arithmetic rules free tiers out entirely: that target allows about 4 minutes 23 seconds of downtime per month, which is less than one gap between checks.
How much should I budget for uptime monitoring?
A reasonable rule for US teams in 2026:
- Personal site or side project: $0. Use a free tier and accept 5 minute checks.
- Small business site or single SaaS app: $9 to $30 a month. You want 1 minute checks, several regions and Slack alerting.
- Growing SaaS team with an on-call rota: $30 to $150 a month, plus whatever incident management you layer on.
- Agency with multiple clients: budget by client site count, and avoid per-seat pricing, because client access is the thing you want to give away freely.
- Regulated or contractual SLA: whatever gets you exportable history and multi-region evidence. This is the one case where the cheap tier is a false economy.

Does uptime monitoring pay for itself?
Usually, and the maths is not subtle. The question is what an hour of downtime costs you, and how much sooner you would have found out. For an ecommerce site doing $50,000 a month, an hour offline during business hours is roughly $100 to $150 of lost orders, before any effect on repeat purchase or ad spend burned on traffic that landed on a broken page. A monitor that turns a 45 minute outage into a 5 minute one pays for a year of a $9 plan in a single incident.
