The software is free and open source, so there is no licence fee. The cost moves rather than disappearing: you pay for the server it runs on, the storage its history fills, and the engineer hours spent patching, upgrading and restoring it. For a homelab that is close to nothing. For a team where someone is paid to keep it alive, it is rarely the cheapest option.

It checks from a single location, wherever you run it, so it cannot tell a real outage apart from a network fault on its own side, and it has no view of how your site looks from another region.
