Status page software gives your customers a public page showing whether your services are up, what is broken right now, and what happened before. The field splits into two groups that are easy to confuse. Statuspage, Instatus and Status.io are display products: they publish beautifully but do not check anything, so you still have to buy a monitor and wire it in. The real split

Display-only pages versus monitoring-backed pages

Almost every disappointing status page purchase comes from missing this distinction at the shortlist stage. Statuspage, Status.io, incident.io and Cachet are publishing platforms. They are very good at the human side of an incident: naming components, writing updates, notifying subscribers, keeping a history. They have no opinion at all about whether your API is currently returning 500s, because they never ask it.

That means a display-only page has three moving parts instead of one. Something has to run the checks. Something has to decide a failure is real rather than a blip. Something has to call the status page API and flip the component. Teams usually build that middle layer once, during onboarding, and then never look at it again. The failure mode is quiet and specific: the site goes down, your monitoring pages the on-call engineer correctly, and the status page sits there showing all systems operational while support tickets pile up.

Monitoring-backed tools collapse those three parts into one. When uptime checks confirm a failure from a second region, the component changes state without anyone logging in, and changes back on recovery. You still write the incident notes, because no tool can explain the cause for you, but the availability part of the page is never stale. There is one honest case for the display-only route. The incident workflow is genuinely mature: templates, subscriber segmentation, scheduled maintenance and audience-specific pages for named customers. Two things push teams off it. It does no monitoring at all, so someone has to build and maintain the integration that actually flips components, and the price ladder climbs fast once you need more than the Hobby tier or want private pages.

If the page itself is the product decision, Instatus is the one to look at. The pages load fast, they look better out of the box than almost anything else here, and the entry tiers are cheap. The catch is the billing shape: uptime access is priced per responder, confirmed on their pricing page at $34 a month billed monthly or $29 billed yearly, so the bill tracks how many humans you add rather than how much you watch.

The most common free starting point, and the free tier is genuinely generous at 50 monitors. The status page is the part that feels thinnest: branding and custom domains sit behind paid tiers, and the page is clearly the secondary product rather than the main event.

We verified the entry tier at $29 a month for 50 monitors and one custom-domain status page, rising to $89 and $299 for the higher tiers. Pairs uptime checks with page speed testing, which most pure uptime tools skip, and the status page comes with the paid plans. Prices are listed in euros, so budget accordingly if you are approving spend in dollars.

The honest catch is structural rather than about features: a self-hosted status page runs on infrastructure that can fail at the same moment as the thing it reports on, which is precisely when you need it. Read down that table and the shape of the category is obvious. The page itself is close to free, and everything expensive sits around it: subscribers, private pages, seats and the monitoring that has to exist underneath. What to compare before you commit

Does it monitor, or only display?

This is the first fork in the road and it decides your real bill. A display-only page needs a separate monitoring product plus an integration that keeps working, which is two vendors and one more thing to break. A combined tool flips components from its own confirmed checks with nothing in between.

Custom domain and branding

A page at status.yourdomain.com is one a worried customer will trust. A page on a vendor subdomain looks like a phishing risk at exactly the wrong moment. Check which tier unlocks the custom domain, because it is very often not the cheapest one.

How subscribers are counted and billed

Most status page pricing ladders are really subscriber ladders. Email subscribers are usually cheap, SMS almost never is, and a page that quietly caps you at a few hundred addresses will force an upgrade the first time you have a bad week.

Independence from your own infrastructure

The page has to survive the outage it describes. That rules out hosting it in the same cluster, behind the same load balancer, or on a domain whose DNS resolves through the stack that just failed. Hosted vendors get this right by default; self-hosted setups usually have to be argued into it.

Public versus private pages

If you sell to enterprises, at least one customer will ask for a page only their team can see, often with their own components and their own SLA numbers. Private and audience-specific pages are consistently the most expensive feature in this category, so price it before you promise it.

Incident workflow

Look for incident templates, severity levels, scheduled maintenance windows and a resolved-incident history. During a real outage nobody writes good prose, so pre-written templates and a forced update cadence do more for your reputation than any design feature.

Per subscriber, per seat and per monitor grow very differently. Per-seat pricing punishes bringing more of your team into the tool, which is the opposite of what you want during an incident. Per-monitor pricing only rises when you genuinely watch more things.

Questions buyers ask when comparing status page software

It depends on whether you already pay for monitoring. If you do not, a combined tool is the better buy: Uptimehub, Better Stack, Hyperping and UptimeRobot all check your services and publish the page from the same data. If you already have monitoring and want the deepest incident workflow, Statuspage remains the most complete, and Instatus is the pick when the page needs to look excellent and cost very little.

A basic public status page runs from nothing to about $30 a month, and a page with a custom domain, several thousand subscribers and private-page support typically lands between $30 and $400 a month. Atlassian Statuspage is the ceiling in this category at $1,499 a month for Enterprise, with private pages priced separately from $79. Bundled status pages inside a monitoring plan are usually the cheapest route, because you are not paying twice.

No. Atlassian Statuspage publishes and communicates, but it does not check whether your services are up. You have to connect an external monitoring tool or push updates through its API, which means the page is only as current as the integration behind it. Tools that monitor and publish from one system update the page from their own confirmed checks instead.

A monitoring tool checks your services from outside and alerts your team privately when something breaks. A status page is the public side of the same event: it tells customers what is affected and when you expect it back. Monitoring answers do we know, and the status page answers do they know. Buying them together removes the integration that otherwise sits between the two.

It is worth it when control or compliance matters more than convenience, and it is a poor trade when it does not. Uptime Kuma and Cachet cost nothing to license, but you own the hosting, patching and the harder problem: keeping the page alive during the outage it exists to explain. Budget the engineer hours honestly and the free option is often not the cheap one.

A subdomain such as status.yourdomain.com is the right default because customers recognize it instantly, but only if its DNS and hosting are independent of your production stack. If the same nameservers or the same load balancer serve both, an infrastructure failure takes down your explanation along with your product. Hosted status page vendors resolve this for you.
