Pingdom sells Synthetic Monitoring as a 22 step quantity ladder that runs from $18 a month to $28,548 a month for 30,000 uptime checks, and Real User Monitoring as a completely separate subscription starting at the same $18. The tier you land on is set by whichever of three bundled meters you exhaust first: uptime checks, advanced checks or SMS alerts.
The absence of named plans is the thing to understand before you compare Pingdom to anything else. Most vendors publish three or four tiers with a name attached, so you can say "we are on Team" and everyone knows what that means. Pingdom publishes a dropdown. Two companies can both be "on Pingdom" and one pays $216 a year while the other pays $342,576, with nothing in the vocabulary to tell them apart.
It also explains why the pricing articles you find disagree with each other. Most of them still describe Starter, Standard, Advanced and Professional tiers at $10 to $250 a month. Those plans no longer exist on Pingdom's page. Every figure below came out of the pricing calculator's own data attributes, which is the vendor's own rate card rather than a reading of the rendered page.

Three meters share one price tier, and the greediest one sets your bill
This is the part of Pingdom's pricing that catches people out, and it is not written down anywhere on the pricing page. Each Synthetic tier bundles three quantities at once: uptime checks, advanced (transaction) checks and SMS alerts. You cannot buy them separately. You land on the cheapest tier that covers all three, which means the meter you exhaust first decides what you pay for the other two.
The practical effect is that alert volume and transaction checks, not monitor count, are what move most small accounts up the ladder. Here is the same 10 uptime checks priced six different ways.

Read the fourth and fifth rows again. Nothing about the monitoring changed. The same ten URLs are being checked. Raising the SMS allowance from 50 to 400 alerts a month takes the subscription from $18 to $290, because the only tier carrying 400 SMS alerts also carries 200 uptime checks you are not using. A noisy month of paging can cost more than the monitoring.
Transaction checks bite the same way and earlier. The entry tier includes exactly one. The second tier includes four. If your checkout flow, your login flow and your search flow each need a scripted journey, that is three advanced checks, and you are on the $40 tier before you have added a second website.

Two details worth noticing in that table. The SMS allowance stops growing at 1,500 and then stays flat for the top nine tiers, so a 30,000 check account gets exactly the same SMS bucket as a 3,000 check account. And advanced checks settle at or near 8% of uptime checks from the 750 tier upwards, after swinging between 10% and 20% at the bottom of the ladder, with one dip to 6.7% at the 15,000 step.
The 11th uptime check costs $22 a month
Because the ladder steps rather than scales, the check that pushes you over a ceiling carries the entire cost of the next step. There is no way to buy 11 checks. You buy 25 and leave 14 idle.
The cliffs are worst at the bottom, which is exactly where small teams live. Adding one uptime check to a 10 check account raises the bill by 122%. The same single check added to a 200 check account raises it by 46%, and at 2,500 checks by 16%. Pingdom's pricing is hardest on the smallest customers, in percentage terms, by a wide margin.
If you are near a boundary, this is worth planning around. An account sitting at 24 uptime checks and about to launch two more sites should know that those two sites cost $38 a month, not the $3 or so a per monitor vendor would charge.

Buying 3,000 times more checks cuts the unit price by less than half
Most software ladders reward volume steeply. Pingdom's barely does. An account with 10 uptime checks pays $1.80 per check per month. An account with 30,000 pays $0.95. That is a 47% discount for three thousand times the commitment, and it is the flattest volume curve we have modelled on any monitoring vendor.

Why this matters
A flat volume curve means Pingdom is not really selling capacity. It is selling capability: scripted transaction journeys, page speed data, real user monitoring and more than 100 probe locations. Every uptime check you add carries a share of that, whether or not you use it.
So the question is not whether Pingdom is expensive per check. It is whether you need the capability. If you run scripted checkout journeys and want real user data next to them, the bundle is coherent and the price is defensible. If you want to know when your API returns a 500, you are paying for a lot of unused product.
Real user monitoring is a second subscription, not a feature
Pingdom's headline "starting at $16.50 a month" refers to Synthetic Monitoring alone. Real User Monitoring is priced on its own parallel 22 step ladder by monthly pageviews, and it starts at exactly the same $18 a month, or $198 a year, for 100,000 pageviews. The free trial enables both, so the default cart on the pricing page reads $396 a year rather than $198. That is the number to quote internally if you are budgeting from the trial.

The RUM ladder runs on up to 1 billion pageviews at $23,400 a month. Its first three steps are priced identically to the Synthetic ladder ($18, $40, $78) and then the two diverge, with RUM staying cheaper from the 1 million pageview step onwards.
Pingdom against Uptimehub, including the lines where they win
We sell uptime monitoring, so read this with that in mind. The honest summary is that Pingdom costs several times more for the same number of monitors, and does several things we do not do at all. If those things matter to you, the price gap is not the deciding factor.

Pick Pingdom when
You need scripted transaction journeys through a checkout or a login, you want page speed and real user data in the same tool, or you need probes in far more than six locations. We do not do any of that. Trying to talk you out of it would just waste your time. What are Pingdom plans?
Pingdom no longer publishes named plans. The pricing page is a quantity calculator where you pick a bundle of uptime checks, advanced checks and SMS alerts from a 22 step ladder, then optionally add Real User Monitoring as a second subscription. What is an advanced check in Pingdom?
An advanced check is a transaction check: a scripted multi step journey such as logging in, searching and completing a checkout, rather than a single request to one URL. Every Synthetic tier bundles a small number of them, starting at 1, and they are the meter most likely to push a small account up several price steps.
Is Pingdom part of SolarWinds?
Yes. SolarWinds acquired Pingdom in 2014, and the product is now sold as SolarWinds Pingdom. What is the cheapest Pingdom plan?
The cheapest Pingdom subscription is $18 a month, or $16.50 a month billed annually, for 10 uptime checks. It is also the most expensive tier per check on the entire ladder at $1.80 per uptime check per month, against $0.95 at the 30,000 check tier. Small accounts pay the highest unit rate.
How many uptime checks do you get with Pingdom?
Ten on the entry subscription. The ladder then steps to 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 750 and 1,000, and on up to 30,000. There is no part way option, so an account needing 11 uptime checks buys the 25 check tier and pays $40 a month instead of $18.
Does Pingdom charge per user?
No. Every Synthetic Monitoring subscription includes unlimited users, which is genuinely generous and better than several rivals that bill per responder seat. What Pingdom meters instead is checks and SMS alerts, so the bill grows with your infrastructure and your alert volume rather than with your team.
Why did my Pingdom bill jump when I did not add any monitors?
Because a Synthetic tier bundles three meters at once: uptime checks, advanced checks and SMS alerts. Whichever you exhaust first sets the tier. Going from 200 to 250 SMS alerts a month, with no change at all to your monitors, moves you from the $78 tier to the $149 tier.
Is Pingdom worth it?
Pingdom is worth it if you need scripted transaction checks, page speed monitoring and real user monitoring from one vendor with more than 100 probe locations, and that is a genuinely strong bundle. It is poor value if all you need is uptime and SSL checks, because you pay roughly $1.50 per check per month for capability you will not use.
How does Pingdom pricing compare to Uptimehub?
At 100 monitors Pingdom is $1,637 a year against $348 for our Pro plan, about 4.7 times, and at 400 monitors it is $6,006 against $948 for Business. Pingdom wins on capability rather than price: it does transaction checks, page speed and real user monitoring, and we do none of those. If you need those, pay Pingdom.
Does Pingdom offer a discount for annual billing?
Yes, and it works out to roughly one month free. Across all 44 options on the pricing calculator the annual discount runs between 8.33% and 9.17%, landing on exactly 11 twelfths for 27 of them: $18 becomes $16.50, $149 becomes $136.42, $1,295 becomes $1,186.92. The small variation is rounding, because Pingdom sets a whole dollar yearly total and divides by 12. No larger volume discount is published.
