An extra user on a monitoring tool costs between $0 and $41 a month, and the spread is not a rounding error, it decides the bill. Better Stack charges $34 a month per responder, PagerDuty $21 to $41 per user, UptimeRobot $15 per seat past the five bundled into Team, Hyperping $7 to $12 depending on tier, Pulsetic $8 for a full teammate or $2 for a notify-only seat, and Cronitor $5 with none included at all. Healthchecks.io, Pingdom and Uptimehub do not meter people on their published price lists. Price the same job on all of them, ten people watching 45 services, and the range is $39 to $365 a month for near-identical monitoring.
Most buyers compare monitoring tools on monitor counts and check intervals, because that is what the plan cards put in the biggest type. Then the team grows from three people to nine, and the invoice moves in a way the monitor count does not explain. The seat meter is the one that compounds, and it is usually printed in the footnote under the plan card rather than on it.
Every figure below was read from the vendor's own pricing page between 23 August and 3 September 2026, in US dollars. The arithmetic is ours and is shown so you can check it.
What does each monitoring vendor charge per user?
Ten vendors, and four distinct answers to the question. Some bundle a few seats and sell more, some charge for every single login, some hold a cheaper alert-only seat behind the full one, and some do not have a people meter at all.

Two of those rows carry a caveat worth stating plainly. Healthchecks.io has no per-seat line anywhere on its published page, but absence from a price list is not a written guarantee, so confirm it in writing before you commit a team. And PagerDuty is not an uptime monitor at all, it is incident response, so its per-user price sits on top of whatever is doing the checking rather than replacing it.
What does the same team actually pay?
Rates in isolation do not tell you much. Here is one concrete shopping list priced on every vendor that can genuinely do the whole job: ten people who all need a login, watching 45 services, on monthly billing.

The cheapest and the dearest are 9.4 times apart, and the monitoring they buy is broadly the same: HTTP checks on 45 endpoints from multiple regions with alerting. On four of the six, more than half the invoice is people rather than monitoring. On Better Stack it is 93 percent, which means the monitors are effectively free and you are buying an on-call roster.
None of that makes Better Stack a bad product. It makes it a product priced for a different shape of buyer: a small on-call rotation watching a large estate, where $34 a head is genuinely fine because there are three heads. Run the same list with three people instead of ten and Better Stack lands at $127 rather than $365, while the per-monitor tools barely move. The meter you should care about is whichever number in your business grows fastest.
Why the seat meter is the one that surprises people
Monitor counts grow when you ship services, which is a decision somebody makes deliberately, usually with a ticket attached. Headcount grows for reasons that have nothing to do with monitoring: a support engineer wants to see the dashboard during an incident, a new backend hire joins the rota, an account manager asks for read access so they can answer a client. Each of those is a five second click and none of them feels like a purchase.
That is why a per-seat monitoring bill drifts. The people asking for logins are not the people who see the invoice, and the request never reaches whoever owns the budget. If you are running a per-seat tool, it is worth wiring the subscription into whatever alerts you when a recurring charge moves, because a seat meter is exactly the kind of line item that grows quietly between renewals and is then very hard to argue down.
Hyperping charges more per seat as you spend more
One vendor deserves singling out, because it runs the opposite way to the market. Almost every SaaS price list makes the marginal seat cheaper on a bigger plan, since that is the normal shape of a volume discount. Hyperping charges $7 a month per extra seat on Essentials, $9 on Pro and $12 on Business, so the same person costs 71 percent more on the $299 plan than on the $29 one.
That has a consequence you can prove rather than estimate. Essentials works out to 15 plus 7 times headcount, and Pro to 44 plus 9 times headcount. Subtract one from the other and the difference is 29 plus twice your headcount, which is positive for every possible team size. There is no crossover at any number of people, and the gap grows by $2 with each hire. So if your estate fits inside the 50 monitors Essentials includes, adding seats to the cheap plan beats upgrading, always. The notify-only seat is the trick most teams miss
Pulsetic is the only vendor in this set that splits the seat in two, and the split is worth real money. A full teammate with dashboard access is $8 a month. A notify-only seat, which receives every alert but cannot open the dashboard, is $2. Four alert-only people cost the same as one full login.
For most on-call rotations that is exactly the right shape, because the majority of people on a rota need to be woken up and then need a link, not a seat in an analytics tool. Take the ten person example above: if two people genuinely administer the monitoring and eight only need to receive alerts, Pulsetic drops from $83 a month to $35. That is a 58 percent cut from one configuration decision, and it is the single largest saving available anywhere in this article. The general lesson travels even where the specific feature does not: before you buy seats, count how many of those people actually need to log in as opposed to be told. On tools without a notify-only tier, a shared Slack channel or a PagerDuty-style escalation often covers the same need for nothing.
Which monitoring tools do not charge per user?
Three on this list, for three different reasons. Pingdom includes unlimited users and meters checks instead. Healthchecks.io publishes no seat line at all, though it only monitors cron jobs and heartbeats rather than websites, so it is not a like-for-like replacement for most of the others. Uptimehub is the third, and we should be upfront that this is our own product. It is priced per monitor and never per seat, so dashboard logins, client viewers and the entire on-call rota cost nothing on any plan. That is a deliberate position rather than a promotion: we think the number that should drive a monitoring bill is how much you are monitoring, not how many people are allowed to look at it. What to check before you sign a per-seat monitoring contract
Four questions, in the order that saves the most money.
How many people will need access in eighteen months, not today? Price the plan at that number. A seat rate that looks trivial at three people is the majority of the bill at ten, as the table above shows on four of six vendors.
Is there a cheaper alert-only seat? Ask even if the pricing page does not mention one. The Pulsetic split saves 58 percent on a ten person rota, and the same question is worth asking of any vendor whose sales team will negotiate.
Does single sign-on cost extra per user? On Cronitor, SAML is an additional $5 per user on top of the $5 seat, which doubles the per-person cost to $10. Does the seat price change when you upgrade? Usually it falls. On Hyperping it rises. Either way, price the tier you expect to be on next year at next year's headcount, not this year's.
